- UN squadron -

There were basically two types of shooters in the "olden days", the topview vertical scrolling one like thunderdragon or Xenon and the sideview horizontally scrolling ones like R-type. UN Squadron fits in the latter category. You can select from three characters each with their specific plane. One or two players can then fly about destroying basically all the enemies standing in their way until you reach the end of the level where there will be a huge boss vehicle waiting for you.

The basic idea is pretty much like every other shooter but there are some new touches that add to the tried and true gameplay. First off before each mission you can buy upgrades for you planes that add firepower or health. Second you can select from three different planes with their own characteristics, an F-20 Tigershark, an F-14 Tomcat and an A-10 Thunderbolt. They range from fast to slow and each has different amounts of armor and weaponry. This makes for a more varied gaming experience though the differences aren't groundbreaking it's still nice. The game can get quite intense though and it's no pushover but not like some shooters where you feel you have no chance at all.

I'm not the most avid shooter fan but occasionally I like to play one and this game doesn't dissapoint. It might not be as hardcore as some fanatics would like but overall it's quite fun to play which is important. The added choices of fighters and weaponry are a big plus as well so I can recommend this game to anyone looking for a good shooter.

Overal rating: 8/10

UN squadron was released for many different systems here are some notes:
Amiga Released in 1990.
The Amiga and Atari ST version are pretty good with smooth scrolling and good sound effects.
Amstrad CPC Released in 1990.
Very colorfull but like many Amstrad games a bit sluggish to play.
Atari ST Released in 1990.
C64 Released in 1990.
The worst of all versions, bland graphics and sluggish gameplay. Avoid.
Super NES Released in 1990.
The SNES lends itself well to this type of game and it also has some extra's the others don't have.
Others This version is not available.
ZX spectrum released in 1990.
